Lecturer: Jeffrey Goldberg, Qualware Instructional Services
Date: Saturday, October 11, 2003, 8:45 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: WPI’s Waltham Campus, 60 Hickory Drive, Waltham, MA
Text: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes (2nd Edition) by Ben FortaSQL

This course also serves as a prerequisite course for Dynamic Web Pages using PHP & Apache Server

Objective: This is an newly created, intensive, fast paced one day mini-course covering everything one needs to understand and use modern-day enterprise relational databases such as Oracle and MySQL. After reviewing database fundamentals, this course introduces the Structured Query Language (SQL) and emphasizes its generic use in accessing modern-day database engines from multiple sources, such as command line and scripted queries, programmatic access from languages such as Perl and C, to dynamic web page generation incorporating information retrieved from the company databases. At least half of the class will be devoted to lab exercises in SQL and lab demonstrations. Since Unix platforms, rather than Microsoft platforms, are typically the server of choice for  large scalable systems such as “eBay”, this course will also teach and demonstrate the use of these services from the rarely taught Unix/Linux point of view using making useof open source software whenever possible.

Targetted for: Individuals that need to understand and/or use relational databases in their upcoming projects, as well as those individuals currently using SQL who need to advance their abilities to include more complicated and efficient queries. For those individuals interested in dynamic HTML web page generation but not fluent in SQL, it is highly recommended that you attend this course prior to signing up for the “Dynamic Web Pages using PHP and Apache Server” mini-course scheduled for November 15.

Prerequisite: Some previous experience in any modern structural programming or scripting language would be helpful but not required.

Handouts: Copies of the course outline slides will be provided along with relevant handouts when appropriate.
